How do we receive wisdom

James 1:5 says, "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given him." In the Spirit-Filled Life Bible, of which Pastor Hayford served as General Editor, the footnotes for this portion of scripture read:

"The wisdom which may be had by asking ‘in faith’ (v. 6) is not intellectual knowledge or philosophical speculation, but spiritual understanding of the purpose of trials. When God grants a gift He does so liberally and without reproach, that is, generously, not stingily, condescendingly, or grudgingly."

In Hayford’s Bible Handbook, under "Wisdom" (page 787) it says:

"…make God the starting point in any quest for wisdom (Ps. 111:10) and to seek wisdom above all else if he would live successfully (Prov. 4:5-9)…. Wisdom in the Bible is often coupled with knowledge (Rom. 11:33; I Cor. 12:8; Col. 2:3). In anticipation of our needing guidance, direction, and knowing, God tells us to ask for wisdom, assuring us of a liberal reception (James 1:5).

James 3:17 says, "But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy." I Corinthians 2:6-8 reads, "However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory, which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory." The footnotes under this passage says:

The very nature of God’s wisdom renders the wisdom of this world inadequate, for it is not of this age. Mystery in the New Testament does not mean mysterious or difficult to understand, but denotes a truth hidden in God’s mind until He chooses to disclose it. God had the plan of redemption in mind before the creation of the world, and it would have remained unknown had He not revealed it in Christ. Believers live by a secret, the essence of which is Christ and His glorious purposes for the world.
