Are Christians to pay taxes to an ungodly government?

We do find ourselves in a difficult situation helping to support a government that does not carry the same morality that we know is so important. But when Jesus walked the earth he paid taxes to a very ungodly government (Matthew 17:24-27; 22:15-21). In I Timothy 2:1-3 we are instructed to pray for, intercede for, and give thanks "...for all men, for kings and all who are in authority...for this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior." At the time this was written, Christians were being openly tortured and martyred for their faith, and immorality was an open and accepted way of life (much more than it is today). So I believe we are to follow Christ’s example.
