What Do You Think About Hypnosis?

Regarding hypnosis, much of the time this is done in partnership with things mystical and of the occult. The word "occult" itself means "hidden things," and has to do with the uncovering of these, which is often the reason "counselors" seek to use hypnosis. I am not able to give you specific scripture decrying hypnosis as evil, but on the other hand, there is no example for us to follow that this would be a biblically sound avenue of healing or counsel. Jesus never "put anyone under," nor did any of the disciples.

Some may try to insure people that hypnosis is not "mind control," but the meaning of the word is "an enduced sleeplike state in which the subject readily accepts the hypnotist’s suggestions." There is no indication that it will allow people to remember things, only that they will be open to the suggestions of the one who is doing the hypnotizing. There is a vulnerability allowed here of one’s spirit and mind to be open to another person or spirit. God is the only one to whom we should ever be that vulnerable.

Many times hypnosis is approached due to a strong desire to know what has happened in one’s childhood, things that possibly our mind have blocked out at this point. Our recommendation would be that if after an extended time in the Word (Ephesians 5:26), prayer and fasting (which are purely biblical), the Holy Spirit has not revealed anything, then it would be best to trust Him and His timing.
