Is Tithing Just An Old Testament Principle? |
The question about tithing being only an Old Testament principle; one of the arguments for this is that it was part of the Law and Jesus "fulfilled the Law" so we dont live by it anymore. But actually tithing came about BEFORE the Law was given. It was a principle God gave to Abraham (Genesis 14:18-20). Most commentators will agree that Melchizidek, who is mentioned in Genesis and then again in Hebrews 7, is a typical representation of Jesus. So the tithe was being given to Jesus then, as it would be now. In
Matthew 23:23 and Luke 11:42, in Jesus dealing with the Pharisees, He says,
"...these you ought to have done..." Jesus brings the moral imperative,
"ought," on the basis that there are certain laws that should not be violated.
In Romans 4 Abraham is set forth as the model for New Testament believers to follow,
before the Law. This principle preceded and transcends the Law. |
